KING OF PRUSSIA, PA (10/3/25) — The American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago (ABCMC) grieves the recent passing of beloved Executive Minister, Rev. Dr. David Gregg. ABCMC and the American Baptist Churches USA denomination continue to hold his family and all who mourn in prayer, trusting in God’s comfort and peace.

During this time of transition, the ABCMC Cabinet has appointed Rev. Carol McVetty and Rev. Douglas Harris to serve together as Interim Executive Ministers, effective in mid-October.

Rev. Harris and Rev. McVetty are well known in the region, having faithfully served in the same interim role from October 2016 to February 2019, prior to the call of Rev. Dr. Gregg. Before that, they ministered as English Language Pastors of North Shore Baptist Church, Chicago, for nearly 20 years. During their first term as regional interims, they provided steady leadership that helped stabilize ABCMC’s financial footing and led to important steps in strategic planning. Their deep knowledge of the region’s congregations and shared ministries, combined with their compassionate guidance, will provide continuity and hope during this season.

“At this tender moment, following the sad passing of Rev. Dr. David Gregg, the return of Rev. Carol McVetty and Rev. Douglas Harris as Co-Interim Executive Ministers offers care, stability, and hope to the American Baptist Churches of Metro Chicago. Their past service in this very role proved invaluable, providing wisdom, steady guidance, and faithful leadership,” said Rev. Dr. Gina Jacobs-Strain, General Secretary of American Baptist Churches USA. “I believe their deep commitment to Christ combined with their knowledge of the region, will help to sustain this community and strengthen the churches and ministries of Metro Chicago as they journey forward together in God’s care.”

ABCMC will officially welcome Rev. McVetty and Rev. Harris at the ABCMC Fall Family Council meeting on Saturday, October 18, at 9:00 a.m. at Irving Park Baptist Church. All are invited to join in this time of gratitude, prayer, and renewed commitment to God’s work in the region.

“Please continue to pray for our fellowship as we walk together in faith, trusting God to guide the region into the future with strength and unity,” said Rev. Frank Walton, President of ABCMC.

American Baptist Churches USA is one of the most diverse Christian denominations today, with approximately 5,000 congregations comprised of 1.3 million members, across the United States and Puerto Rico, all engaged in God’s mission around the world.
