Remembering Mentor Rev. Dr. Ralph Abernathy
By Rev. Dr. Trinette V. McCray

“I heard him share the witness he had to the ministry that he and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had engaged in with the civil rights movement. I was so moved.”

I was working for United Way of Greater Milwaukee. My background was in Urban Affairs and Urban Planning when I sensed God’s call to come into ministry and do community planning and help build God’s kingdom on earth. While studying for full-time service at Morehouse School of Religion in Atlanta I became a watch care member of West Hunter Street Baptist Church where Rev. Ralph David Abernathy was the pastor. He took me in and gave me such wonderful pastoral care. He influenced me when I would sit and hear him preach about justice, mercy and righteousness and God’s plan for God’s people and for the world. I listened to him share with me very closely and personally what being called to that kind of ministry meant to him.
