A Message in Celebration of Epiphany from General Secretary Rev. Dr. Gina Jacobs-Strain

As the Christmas season is coming to a close and we celebrate Epiphany, there is a profound element within the first verse of the twelve that recounts the Epiphany story—one that deserves our focused attention. It can be found in the latter half of verse one: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem.” The Magi traveled a great distance, guided by a celestial event they believed heralded the birth of a king.

This event is yet another testament to the inclusivity of God’s redemptive plan, which has always stretched beyond geographical and cultural boundaries. The plan made manifest through the birth of an innocent child more than two thousand years ago was intended for all people—both Jews and Gentiles alike. The miraculous nature of the virgin birth, the Magi—arrived to pay homage to the Child born to be King, bringing rich and meaningful gifts. After their experience with the Christ child in verse twelve, God warned them not to return to Herod, so they left for their country another way.

The unfolding of God’s redemption story is no mere coincidence; it is a deliberate revelation of God’s eternal intention—that all of humanity, regardless of background, culture, or nationality, be offered the hope and salvation found in the Good News of Jesus Christ. As we reflect on the significance of Epiphany, we are reminded that God’s plan for salvation has always been universal. From the beginning, God’s purpose has been for everyone to experience God’s saving grace.

As we celebrate Epiphany, let us challenge ourselves to share God’s grace all year long, reminding ourselves that God’s plan was and is for everyone from the very start. In this inclusivity lies the beauty of the Gospel: a message for all people everywhere. In 2025, what new paths will we embark on together as we find another way to share the Good News and new ways to live in the wonder and magnificence of our Savior, Jesus Christ?

To God be the Glory!
